Processes - Make Your Business Bulletproof

Processes both help your company to produce quality work and capture improvements

Years ago, I struck up a conversation with the woman in the seat next to me on a flight to Chicago. She was the head of HR for a medical device company. After trading some pleasantries, we shared what we did professionally. Not wanting to let an opportunity pass, I shared some of the achievements from my career. She was duly impressed and said that she wished that she could hire me. The problem, she said, was that the incumbent, although not performing to what they needed, had too much knowledge to lose.

With that, I asked if they were ISO certified. She said yes! Well, I said, if you have ISO certification then you have processes. And if you have good processes, you shouldn't have to worry about losing anyone. It was as if a light switch was flipped in her head. She walked off the plane with a new vision of processes and their importance - as well as a vision of how the existence of those processes helped her in her job.

Documented processes are a crucial component of any successful organization. They provide a clear and consistent framework for employees to follow, ensuring that tasks are completed efficiently and effectively. Well-documented processes also make it easier for new employees to learn their roles and responsibilities, as they have a clear understanding of the steps required to complete their work.

In addition to providing structure and clarity, documented processes also allow for continuous improvement. By regularly reviewing and updating processes, organizations can identify areas for improvement and make changes to increase efficiency and effectiveness. This can lead to cost savings, increased productivity, and improved customer satisfaction.

Effective process improvement requires a systematic and data-driven approach. By collecting and analyzing data on process performance, organizations can identify areas for improvement and develop and implement solutions. This may involve streamlining steps, automating certain tasks, or reorganizing workflows.

Overall, documented processes and process improvement are vital for the success of any organization. They provide a clear framework for employees to follow, facilitate continuous improvement, and help organizations to be more efficient and effective.
